The Historic Boiler Room Bar Is Reopening for This Week's High Point Market

The historic Boiler Room Bar, a fixture in Market Square until the early 1990s, is reopening for this week's High Point Market after an extensive renovation by the management and tenants of the Antique & Design Center, which operates an adjacent "show within a show" during market.

The revamped bar, on the ground floor of Market Square not far from Starbuck's, will feature everything from whiskey tastings to live music by furniture industry musicians, said Karen Luisana, managing director of the Antique & Design Center.

"It's all about great design and preservation here ... and we're thrilled to be able to bring back some of the spirit of the old bar, as well as the original, raw grandeur of the building itself," Luisana said.

She said a small café that had occupied part of the Boiler Room space has been torn out, providing easier access to the bar and making the base of Market Square's landmark smokestack visible throughout the ground floor.

A grand opening celebration will begin at 2 p.m., Friday, April 19, featuring music by interior designer Chris Sparks, E.J. Victor executive Edward Phifer and Furniture/Today Editor-in-chief Ray Allegrezza.

The Antique & Design Center has partnered with Troy and Sons, an Asheville, N.C.-based distiller, for a series of whiskey tastings each evening. Beer, wine and snacks also will be available.

The bar is open from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. each day during market.
