Demand for LED Lighting Products for Q4 to Be Weak

Demand for LED lighting products for the fourth quarter will be weak as LED lighting vendors took deliveries in the second and third quarters for products to be launched in the fourth, and some will adjust inventories through the end of the year, according to Taiwan-based LED makers.

LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker Epistar had over 35% of LED chips shipped in the third quarter used in lighting, 30-35% in backlighting, 10-15% in outdoor display boards, and 5% in in-car displays, the company indicated.

LED chip maker and packaging service provider Lextar Electronics said it saw orders from LCD TV vendors and Japan- and Europe-based LED lighting vendors decrease in the third quarter. Lextar will start shipments of mid-power LED chips to US-based Cree in the fourth quarter, the company noted.

Global demand for LED lighting in 2015 is likely to double that in 2014, according to LED packaging service provider Unity Opto Technology. Unity Opto is expanding its LED lighting production capacity by as much as 100%, with completion scheduled for the end of October.
