The extent to which realize the benefits of energy conservation

Further demonstrating the extent to which domestic and commercial property-owners are recognising the benefits of energy-saving, cost-efficient LED lights, general lighting has - for the very first time - become the primary market for packaged LEDs.

Data presented at the Strategies in Light Conference in Santa Clara, California, revealed that solid state lighting now accounts for $3.1 billion (£2 billion) of all packaged LED sales.

These figures sit within an LED market worth $13.7 billion overall, including other forms of lighting such as backlighting for mobile devices, monitors such as computers and televisions, signs and automotive industry use, such as for car headlights.

Accordingly, solid state lighting - such as that which comprises bathroom light fittings and outdoor lighting - now makes up a considerable 23 per cent of the entire packaged LED market.

Backlighting for monitors such as computers and televisions now occupies 22 per cent of the market, mobile phones 19 per cent and signs 14 per cent. The replacement lamp market grew from $2.1 billion the year before last to $2.58 billion in 2012.

Ella Shum, director of the LED practice at Strategies Unlimited, suggested at the conference that LED giants Lumileds and Cree were the two main beneficiaries of this boost in general lighting LEDs, as the two companies saw sales growth of the lights stand at 21 per cent and 18 per cent respectively.

Samsung and Korean company Lumens were bolstered the most by the LED market for consumer products due to, for example, the explosive emergence of tablet devices which use the technology. Samsung's growth in LED production reached 22 per cent while Lumens saw a 32 per cent boost, due to its close links with the former company.

The Strategies in Light Conference attracted almost 5,000 attendees, 200 exhibiting companies and visitors from over 30 countries, offering world-class networking opportunities for those in the industry and over 80 expert speakers from around the globe.
