Pregis Buys US Firm Sharp Packaging Systems

Protective packaging materials provider Pregis has acquired US-based Sharp Packaging Systems for an undisclosed sum.

Based in Sussex of Wisconsin, Sharp is engaged in the designing and manufacturing of flexible bagging systems for the customers.

The company’s systems can be used in different applications, including -commerce, medical/pharmaceutical, retail displays, injection molding, food, linen services and OEM parts.

The acquisition will allow Pregis to provide a complete line of flexible packaging bagging systems and materials for the customers.

In 2016, Sharp had constructed new 160,000ft² advanced manufacturing facility in Sussex, as part of its strategy to expand its production capacity.

With around 200 employees, the company currently operates three locations.

Once the deal concludes, Sharp will operate as a Pregis business unit under the leadership of current Sharp president Mike Menz.

Pregis president and CEO Kevin Baudhuin said: “The shift to dimensional weight-based transport pricing is making bagging an attractive option for a variety of products that do not require cushioning protection.

“By adding bagging systems to our already robust protective packaging product offering, we can offer customers—particularly those whose market strategy includes ecommerce—another option to deliver their products to consumers.”

Over the three years, Sharp is the fourth acquisition for Pregis, while the other three include 3M Company’s protective films business, EasyPack paper-based protective packaging systems and Eagle Film Extruders.

In September 2016, Pregis acquired UK-based aper-based protective packaging company, Easypack.

The acquisition added a complete line of paper void fill, cushioning and block / brace solutions, expanding Pregis’s North American product portfolio.
