2015 Ford Mustang Engine to Debut in Lincoln MKC SUV

An all-new engine set to power the 2015 Ford Mustang will make its world premiere at next week’s Los Angeles motor show in the new Lincoln MKC SUV.

Claimed by Ford to produce 205kW at 5500rpm and 406Nm at 3000rpm, “according to preliminary test data”, the all-new turbocharged 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder petrol engine will be introduced in the Kuga-based Lincoln MKC when it launches in the US from June 2014. A 180kW/365Nm 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine will be offered on the MKC as standard.

Destined to power the all-new Ford Mustang in Europe – and likely other export markets, including Australia – the 2.3-litre EcoBoost unit will be the most fuel efficient engine offered in the new Pony car range, slotting beneath a 3.7-litre V6 and an uprated supercharged 5.0-litre ‘Coyote’ V8.

Ford has not announced fuel consumption or CO2 emission data for the new EcoBoost engine at this stage. A hint potentially came in the form of a recently leaked product marketing survey for what is believed to be the next Mustang, which mentioned a 231kW/420Nm 2.4-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder averaging 7.4L/100km.

The same survey also presented options of a 224kW/393Nm 3.8-litre V6, rated at 8.1L/100km, and a flagship 321kW/536Nm 4.9-litre V8 netting 8.4L/100km.

Teased last month in computer-generated images, the new Ford Mustang is set to debut at January’s Detroit auto show before production starts around July and the car arrives in Australia from 2015.

Employing independent rear suspension for the first time – rather than its previous live rear axle – the ‘Stang will fill the role of Ford Australia’s hero car following the demise of the Falcon – including the reborn XR8 – in 2016.

The LA auto show begins on November 20.
