Stanley Electric Launches New OLED Taillights

Japanese lighting manufacturer Stanley Electric showcased its latest OLED taillights at the 44th Tokyo Motor Show 2015, which took place from Oct 29 to Nov 8, 2015, reported Nikkei Technology.

The new OLED taillights are said to offer more flexibility in automotive lighting designs, and expected to be commercialized in 2020.

When the OLED taillights are turned off, the nearly transparent luminaires blends in with the chrome-plate fully integrating it into other chrome-plated parts of the vehicle. However, once the light is switched on it emits a very strong red glow. These kinds of designs could also add onto distinctive styling in cars.

Compared to LEDs, which are in a more advanced commercialization stage, OLEDS are vulnerable to heat, humidity and other environmental stress. However, the Japanese lighting manufacturer remained upbeat about commercializing the OLED taillights by 2020, especially after thermal resistance is raised.
