eMagin, an innovator of OLED microdisplays and virtual imaging technologies, recently declared that the U.S. Navy has awarded the company with a $2.4 M worth contract for research and development of 2,000 x 2,000 px bright OLED microdisplay.

The $1.1 M valued Phase I of the project will commence at once and will continue during September 2012 followed by the commencement of $1.3 M worth Phase II option period, which will be carried over for another one year. The proposed operation in this program will capitalize on the achievements resulting from the previous Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) OLED programs, thereby promoting the OLED performance. Through this program operation, eMagin's OLED microdisplays will be implemented in environments like aircraft cockpits that need extremely high brightness display.

According to the President and CEO of eMagin, Andrew Sculley, eMagin considers this award to be important as it will provide the company with the potential required to manufacture enhanced microdisplay solution. Also, the implementation of eMagin's OLED microdisplays will be promoted for deployment in challenging avionics applications and other potential commercial applications. The new development upgrade will result in high resolution, brightness, and color gamut solution than presently offered by other microdisplay producer. Sculley added that eMagin is honored to carry out this major operation along with the NVESD and the U.S. Navy.

eMagin manufactures and combines high-resolution OLED microdisplays with magnifying optics to deliver virtual images similar to TV and computer displays in low-power, portable, and lightweight personal displays.
