Calorie Counting Could Soon Be Elevated to Another Level

Calorie counting could soon be elevated to another level with a US startup introducing a plate which can figure out nutritional information.

The ground breaking ‘SmartPlate’ is separated into three sections, each with a small digital camera that photographs food. Once captured it is recognised by a smartphone app within seconds. The plate also weighs meals so it knows exactly what you are eating.

The plate is water resistant including its charger which is designed to sit next to a sink. If diners do not have their plate with them they can use the app to take a picture and the food can still be analysed. The plate cannot be put in the microwave.

“Our SmartPlate focuses on automating positive eating habits like some wearables have done for fitness habits,” said Anthony Ortiz, CEO of Fitly, the startup behind the innovation.

Fitly is currently fundraising to help manufacture the plate and it is expected to be released in mid 2016. The SmartPlate will retail for approximately $AU250.
