The distilled spirits sales by suppliers in the US increased by 4% to $23.1bn in 2014, according to the Distilled Spirits Council.

US Distilled Spirits Sales Record 4% Growth in 2014

The Distilled Spirits Council is a trade association representing producers and marketers of distilled spirits sold in the US.

Figures released by the council highlight that the total US volume growth increased 2.2% to 210 million cases.

The growth was driven by continued demand for American whiskeys in the US and abroad; and growth of small distillers, which expanded grassroots and overall interest in the spirits category.

Distilled Spirits Council president and CEO Peter H. Cressy said: "Consumer interest in industry innovations and premium products from distilled spirits producers of all sizes contributed to another year of steady growth in 2014.

"In the U.S. market, strong consumer interest in cocktails, along with continuing market access and modernization improvements, is providing the industry with a solid base for future growth."

Bourbon and Tennessee whiskey sales volumes increased by 7.4% to over 19 million cases, while flavored products, such as vodka, rum or whiskey, grew by 1.9 million cases.

The council also predicted that American spirits exports in 2014 would grow 3.7% to a total $1.56bn (projected), for the fifth straight year of record exports.

The improved regulatory and tax environment resulted in expanded market access and a relatively low number of state tax threats.
