Plastic packaging solutions provider Alpla has agreed to acquire South Africa-based Boxmore Packaging for an undisclosed sum.
Based in Samrand of Johannesburg, Boxmore manufactures PET pre-forms, PET bottles and closures for the customers in southern Africa.
The firm’s products can be used in various applications, including drinks, food, home and personal care, pharmaceutical and chemical products.
Established in 1995, the company employs around 1,000 people at its nine locations.
Boxmore produces around four billion products per annum, which are marketed in around 20 African countries and on the islands in the Indian Ocean.
The current board under the leadership of Boxmore CEO Len Engelbrecht will continue to manage the acquired business, which will be integrated into the existing Alpla SA business.
The deal is subject to the legal and regulatory approval by the competition authorities.
Alpla CEO Günther Lehner said: ‘The African continent is an attractive growth market for us. With the purchase of Boxmore Packaging, we now also have a broad basis for entering the market in South Africa, in addition to our activities with Alpla TABA in North Africa.
Alpla Africa, Middle East and Turkey regional director Christoph Riedlsperger said: “Both the products and customer structure of Boxmore Packaging suit our corporate structure very well.”
Last year, Alpla acquired majority stake in Egypt-based Taba Group to expand operations in Africa and the Middle East.
Established in 1988, Taba manufactures plastic bottles and closures for international customers in the pharmaceutical, home care, body care, food and beverage industries
Last month, Alpla agreed to acquire Italian firm Propack, which manufactures high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles for use in home-care applications.
Propack exclusively supplies bottles for the mother-company Biochimica, which produces detergent products.
