UK's Abel &Cole Selects Plastiroll-Developed Compostable Packaging Film

Organic food delivery company Abel & Cole has become the first firm in the UK to use the new transparent compostable packaging, which is developed by Finland's Plastiroll, for its vegetables.

Plastiroll's new easily processable biodegradable packaging film, Bioska 506, is expected to improve the shelf life of fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables.

Abel & Cole production head Will Robinson said: "We looked at many packaging sources to see what is the best to recycle or compost, what was GMO-free and what keeps our product quality as high as possible. And Plastiroll really lived up to its promises."

The packaging film allows the fruit and vegetables to retain their moisture while preventing condensation inside the package. This helps in keeping the produce fresh for longer time.

Made from fully compostable and biodegradable raw materials, the film does not contain any genetically modified organisms.

Robinson added: "We trialled two to three different products [including cardboard coating and biodegradable plastics] before we picked Plastiroll.

"We chose them because of their price, great usability and the fact the film really does what it says, it keeps our carrots very fresh."

Designed to reduce costly food and packaging waste, the new packaging film can be used in various sectors such as flowers, clothes and magazines.

Abel & Cole, which currently delivers 80,000 boxes of organic food and recipe kits every week, is considering expanding the use of the new packaging bags for all its carrots supply.
