Canada Become The First Canadian Retailer to Floor Octaspring

TORONTO — Sleep Country Canada has become the first Canadian retailer to floor Octaspring, the high-end European all-foam spring mattress. The retailer rolled out the brand to its more than 150 stores across the country in early November.

Sleep Country has already advertised the Octaspring line, made by Belgium-based Dormeo, on television and added three models to its website. It is also on the floor at Dormez-Vous, the company's Quebec subsidiary.

Created by inventor Willy Poppe, and launched in Europe in 2011, Octaspring is billed as the latest generation of foam mattresses - combining the advantages of the inner spring/pocket coil with those inherent in foam.

In a statement, Dormeo North America President Chris Henning said that springs give the user great ventilation but pressure points can become uncomfortable, while memory foam offers greater support but the lack of airflow can create heat resulting in another form of discomfort.

Octaspring mattresses are named for the patented, eight-pillared, honeycomb foam springs that form the core of its support. Hennings said this construction "defines the bed's unique qualities and has led to the innovation being referred to as 'the most important innovation in mattress design in a generation.'"

"Where metal springs push, Octaspring cradles and comforts; where memory foam is hot, Octaspring is cool and airy," he added.

The company quotes a Statistics Canada report which estimates that some 3.3 million Canadians have difficulty either falling or staying asleep.

"Octaspring's revolutionary new technology provides a cradling, comforting support and air-ventilation unmatched in any other mattress. The outcome is a deeper, more restful sleep, resulting in a healthier lifestyle," Hennings said.

The three Octaspring offered on Sleep Country's website, the 5500, 6500 and 8500 models, are priced above C$2,000 and represent the high end of the retailer's product assortment, which includes bedding from Tempur-Pedic and Serta's iComfort collection.

"We have seen Octaspring bring sleep comfort to consumers around the world and are delighted to now introduce the collection to the Canadian consumer through our retail partner Sleep Country Canada and Dormez-Vous in Quebec," said Kym Bramm, Dormeo Octaspring's chief executive officer.

In an interview, Henning said the exclusive distribution arrangement with Sleep Country is time limited. When it expires, he hopes to broaden Octaspring's distribution across Canada.

The line is currently available in more than 30 countries, with Henning leading Dormeo's sales and marketing efforts in North America from his office in Dallas. He will be presenting the line at the upcoming Las Vegas Market, Jan. 28-Feb. 1, in World Market Center space B-922.

The company also launched a Canadian website in support of the brand at www.octaspring.ca.
