The transition will be carried out over the next two months, the company said. However, it will continue to produce cottage cheese and sour cream.

International Brotherhood of Teamsters, the employees union, has been been notified of the lay-offs.

The decision mainly affects workers at Sinton's Colorado Springs plant and distribution facilities in Denver and Eagle.

Affected staff will be supported by severance package and other transition benefits.

The Gazette quoted Borden Dairy as saying in a statement: "We believe by moving our production and distribution towards higher-value products such as cultured products and extended-shelf-life milk, we can better ensure the long-term future for the Sinton plant."

Sinton plans to invest in upgrading the facility's capability to produce extended-shelf life milk.

Sinton's product portfolio comprises cottage cheese, sour cream and cultured dairy products which are available under the Nordica, Sinton and Borden brands.

The company also offers fresh milk under Borden and private-label names in Colorado market.
