Samsung Gear VR Headset Can Leap Into Fully Immersive Worlds Thanks to a New Video APP

Early adopters who’ve snapped up the Samsung Gear VR Virtual Reality headset can now leap into fully immersive worlds thanks to a new video app.

The Milk VR app delivers free 360-degree videos to the “Innovator Edition” headset, which went on sale in the United States in early December.

The clips, which last 1-10 minutes, allow those with the Galaxy Note 4 and Gear VR combo to explore from scene from the camera’s point of view.

"Video is like the Wild West in VR," said Nick DiCarlo, head of Samsung's VR business, told CNET. "There are so many ways to shoot immersive video. Milk VR can play a wide range of content."

The Milk VR apps will join the Milk Radio and Milk Video services already offered by Samsung, but the company hopes this Virtual Reality spin-off can blaze a trail for VR video.

The firm will be paying for the videos and they’ll be available to download as well as streamed, once the app has been obtained from the Gear VR homescreen.

Samsung has so far been mum about the launch of a full commercial version of the Gear VR headset or whether the Innovator Edition will be available outside of the US.

Perhaps the firm will have an answer at CES 2015 next week?
