US Scrap Exports Rises by 44.2 Percent Over The Previous Month

According to the statistics released by the US International Trade Commission (US ITC), in May this year US scrap exports amounted to 2.16 million metric tons, rising by 44.2 percent over the previous month and up 5.8 percent year on year. The month-on-month increase was mainly due to the strong increase in scrap exports to Malaysia with 293,779 mt. In the first five months of the year, the US exported 9 million mt of steel scrap, falling 3.9 percent compared to the first five months of 2012.

In May this year, US scrap exports to Turkey amounted to 699,537 metric tons, up 38.7 percent over April and increasing 15.7 percent year on year. Taiwan followed Malaysia in May, importing 270,286 mt of scrap from the US, decreasing by 3.8 percent year on year.
