International Paper Has Signed a Long-Term Deal with Balcones Resources

US-based packaging firm International Paper has signed a long-term deal with recycling services provider Balcones Resources to recover additional old corrugated containers (OCC) or used cardboard boxes.

International Paper will use the recovered OCC in the production of new corrugated boxes.

The move is part of the company's plan to support its initiative to increase the OCC recovery by 15% by 2020.

International Paper Containerboard and Recycling vice president and general manager Thomas Cleves said, "By working with generators and suppliers to identify and capture new sources of recyclable materials, we're confident that we can further increase our recovery rates in the coming years."

At present, the packaging firm recovers and facilitates the sale of over six million tons of fiber annually in the US. It own and operates 23 recycling facilities across the globe and uses collaborations and acquisitions to recover material.

Balcones Resources processes over 13,000t of recyclables every month. The company recently entered into a long-term agreement with the City of Austin to process over 60% municipal curbside recyclables.
