GSK to Close Tablet-Packaging Plant at Boronia Site in Melbourne's East, Australia

Global healthcare company GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is all set to close the tablet-packaging plant at its Boronia site in Melbourne's east, Australia, leading to a loss of 120 jobs.

According to GSK, continuing challenges in the operating environment in Australia have prompted it to close its packaging business.

Boronia site director Troy Webb said the job losses occur as the company shuts its packaging business to concentrate on technology manufacturing.

"Any redundancy will not come into effect immediately as the process will take some time to account for regulatory requirements of affected markets," Webb said.

The plant, which employs 363 people at present, manufactures packaging for respiratory treatments and sterile containers for liquid medicines.

GSK, the UK-based company, provides medicines, vaccines and over-the-counter healthcare products.
