New Amazon Kindle: 5 Things You Need to Know

We run through all the big new features on the redesigned entry-level Kindle.

Amazon has announced a newly redesigned version of its base-level Kindle – the first update to the most affordable Kindle in two years.

And while this isn't exactly a major overhaul to the iconic e-reader, the new features are certainly worth knowing about.

Here are the five biggest things you need to know.

1. It's thinner and lighter

While the newly introduced Kindle doesn't make any huge changes to the device's design, there are some significant tweaks worth noting. The new model is 11% thinner and 16% lighter than its predecessor, which will certainly make a difference when it comes to extended e-reading sessions.

What's more, the device now has a slightly more rounded design, which the company claims will make it easier to hold in one hand.

2. It's got a lot more memory

Not content with a few design tweaks, Amazon has also packed its new e-reader with twice the amount of RAM as the previous model. You'll still get 4GB of on-board storage, which will hold thousands of e-books, but you now get 512MB of RAM as opposed to 256MB.

3. There's a new colour option

Whereas the last generation Kindle was available in Black only, Amazon has decided to offer the latest model in both Black and White, bringing it in line with the Kindle Paperwhite's two colour options. Again, it's not a major addition to the device but fans of ivory have now been catered for.

4. Bluetooth audio comes as standard

One big addition to the new model is Bluetooth audio, making this the first Kindle to include the feature. It means the visually impaired can use the VoiceView screen reader to read the content on-screen out loud. Just hook up your Bluetooth headphones or a speaker and you're good to go.

5. It's the same price as the last one

And finally, Amazon has resisted the urge to bump the price up, keeping the new Kindle model at the same £59.99 price point for the 'with special offers' version, and £69.99 for the 'without special offers' option. It'll be released on July 20 2016 but you can pre-order now. Just click the link at the top of this page.
