The Leeuwin Lions Club Is Set to Wrap up Its Glass Recycling Service in Augusta

THE Leeuwin Lions Club is set to wrap up its glass recycling service in Augusta, with glass collection to cease all together.

Shire of Augusta Margaret River director of sustainable development Iliya Hastings thanked the volunteer group for their outstanding efforts and acknowledged they were facing increasing challenges in managing the recycling service.

"The glass received at the Augusta Recycling Facility was sent to Perth and on to Adelaide for remanufacture into glass bottles," he said.

"Rising transportation costs made it unviable to continue the recycling program in this form so in October last year the Shire supplied them Lions with a bin at the Hillview Road site.

"The bin was picked up by the Shire and glass recycled at the Davis Road facility.

"They recently made the difficult decision to discontinue glass collection at the site altogether.

Augusta residents are now being asked to drop these items to the Kudardup Transfer Station.

"We have made provisions in our kerbside recycling contract to include Augusta if required but at this stage the Leeuwin Lions are keen to continue the rest of their recycling service.

"We will support them in this decision and ask the community to please continue to recycle their items appropriately.

"New signage will be erected on the Augusta Recycling Facility site in the coming weeks advising residents of the changes.
