German carmaker Volkswagen is planning to double its capacity in China to four million vehicles during the next few years.

According to the carmaker, China is the firm's highest sales region and is responsible for the company's sales and profits.

Volkswagen group China head Jochem Heizmann was quoted by German weekly magazine Focus as saying, "By 2018 we will raise our production capacity in the country to 4 million vehicles."

The company's two Chinese joint ventures (JV) including FAW and Shanghai Automotive are planning to spend EUR14bn ($17bn) by 2016, and have reported 15% rise in output to 2.20 million vehicles in 2011.

German carmaker earlier said that its annual production capacity in China would increase to 3 million cars by 2013.

Volkswagen is also planning to build a new EUR170m assembly plant in Urumqi, in Northwest China, and is currently expanding its plants in Changchun, Nanjing and Chengdu as well as building new facilities in Yizheng, Foshan and Ningbo.
