FIAT Will Halt The Production of Cars

Italian carmaker Fiat will halt the production of cars at its Pomigliano plant for two weeks this autumn due to weak demand.

Because of the weak demand, more European carmakers are trying take steps to cope up with five years of declining car sales on the continent.

Fiat spokeswoman was quoted by Just Auto as saying that the reason is because of the situation of the market, because of the sales.

"We have the agreement of the unions for this. We told the unions the plant will be closed," spokeswoman said.

The Pomigliano plant is currently manufacturing the Panda city car.

Fiat said it will place the 2,200 Pomigliano workers on a temporary layoff scheme from 24 to 28 September, and from 1 to 5 October .

The Pomigliano workers will now only receive 80% of their normal salary through Italy's government cassa integrazione scheme.

Fiat's CEO Sergio Marchionne will make an announcement regarding the automaker's investment plans on 30 October 2012.
