Monocrystal Aims to Produce Crystal of Over 150kg in 2014

At 2013 LED Lighting Taiwan, Russia-based upstream sapphire crystal maker Monocrystal showcased 12-inch substrates. The firm aims to produce crystal of over 150kg in 2014 for manufacturing 6-inch sapphire ingots.

Digitimes Research noted that judging from the exhibition, it is apparent that upstream LED firms have been aiming to achieve higher brightness efficiency while downstream firms have been expanding applications to new markets such as plant factories.

Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Formosa Epitaxy showcased package free chip (PFC) technology which can lower production costs while increasing brightness efficiency. The white LED components that adopt such technology have brightness efficiency of 180lm/W.

Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) showcased 70-inch Ultra HD edge-lit LED TVs with product thickness of only 75.26mm.

Rohm was the only firm to display OLED lighting products although the product has yet to enter the lighting market and brightness efficiency is only 40lm/W. However, the product is light and thin with the possiblity of multiple designs, and hence it was one of the spotlights of the exhibition, said Digitimes Research.
