New Report Lets Retailers Check Safety of Toys

Chemical Risk Management Profile from Toy Industry Forum launches.

A new set of documents allows toy retailers to check the safety of their stock.

The Chemical Risk Management Profile allows retailers to "assess the readiness" of their toy suppliers, in terms of chemical compliance.

This has been unveiled by the UK Toy Industry Forum, a group of Quality Assurance (QA) professionals from major UK toy brands, retailers, suppliers, laboratories and trade associations. It's hosted by QA service provider Bureau Veritas Consumer Products Services and launched in June 2012.

The Chemical Risk Management Profile is a questionnaire designed to "assess supplier processes in order to control restricted substances in their supply chain".

It comes ahead of the Toy Safety Directive which comes into force on July 20th.

The Chemical Risk Management Profile is free for toy companies and can be downloaded.

Malcolm Horner from Bureau Veritas and Chairman of the Working Group commented: “More and more toy businesses are building their chemical compliance strategies around a mix of raw material testing, risk assessment, factory management, process control or final product testing. The Chemical Risk Management Profile is a great tool to help these companies show evidence that they have good controls in place.”

Wendy Phillips, Managing Director of Toy Safety Experts, who was part of the working group, added: “The Chemical Risk Management profile shows that retail and the toy industry can work together in facing the challenges that the ever increasing chemical requirements for toys bring.”
