Gm Said Rivals for The Likes of The Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ Would Be a Successful Model

The boss of General Motors’ North American operations says a compact rear-wheel-drive sports car is on his wish list.

Speaking with industry journal Automotive News, GM North America president Mark Reuss said he believed a rival for the likes of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ would be a successful model for the Detroit-based manufacturer.

“A really nice, light, rear-drive car that’s inexpensive – we know that rings a bell,” Reuss said.

“That’d be a huge win for us if we had that.”

The former Holden head honcho said the brand had been encouraged by a “really strong” positive reaction from young people to its Chevrolet Code 130R concept, which debuted at last year’s Detroit auto show.

The boxy 4.4-metre four-seat Code 130R coupe concept borrowed design cues from the Camaro and inherited the 110kW/200Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine from the Chevrolet Cruze.

Reuss said if the company did decide to build a compact sports car it would not look anything like the Code concept, however, insisting that the 2012 design was already too dated.

He also rejected that it would be built on the rear-wheel-drive ‘Alpha’ platform, with the brand to instead opt for an architecture that was “really scalable and efficient”.
