You Soon Might Be Able To Pay For Your Amazon Purchases With A Selfie

Online retail giant, Amazon is looking to keep itself ahead of the curve with a proposed new method of paying for your orders; via a selfie.

Last year, the Seattle-based company filed a patent application for a method that would allow shoppers to make a purchase by taking a photo or video of themselves, rather than using an account password.

The application aims to make it safer for shoppers to buy something online by relying on images of themselves instead of passwords, reducing the risk of letting personal information falling into the wrong hands.

Recode reports that under the scenario in the patent application, a phone or computer “can prompt the user to perform certain actions, motions or gestures, such as a smile, blink or a tilt of the head.”

These actions would be carried out in order to prove that the shopper is who he or she says, rather than an imposter holding a photo of the shopper.

The new application is related to a separate patent Amazon currently holds for a technology that allows a device to authenticate a user via a photo or video, but not complete a transaction.
