Top Gear Star Was at The Opening of The London Classic Car Show

Top Gear star was at the opening of the London Classic Car show.

Top Gear star James May has named the top 13 cars which he believes changed the world - a list topped by the Hornby model of the Corgi James Bond Aston Martin DB5.

In the wake of the classic Goldfinger movie - starring Sean Connery as the British agent - Corgi began its decades-long relationship with the James Bond franchise, producing a gold Aston Martin DB5 1:46 scale model complete with retractable machine guns, ejector seat, rear bullet screen and telescopic riders.

It went on to become the biggest selling toy of 1964, selling in excess of 6 million units, beating Ford Mustang's record of the fastest selling car of all time and receiving the first ever Toy of the Year award.

"The thing about the Corgi DB5 is that it was a great toy at the time," May explained. "If you've got an iPod now you'll probably think it's rubbish, but at the time it was absolutely amazing.

"Of course, it is a personal and emotive choice and a lot of people will disagree with me. But that's the point of this display. It's about starting a debate rather than concluding one."

Hornby is due to unveil a new and fully feature re-issue of the Corgi original DB5 at Toy Fair later this month. In addition, to celebrate 007 returning to screens in Spectre in October, there will also be a limited number of special edition models produced to celebrate the 50th anniversary milestone, although Hornby is remaining tight-lipped on exactly what these will look like.

The London Classic Car show runs until Sunday, January 11th at ExCeL in London's Docklands.
