Repak's statistics on Ireland's Easter habit revealed that the country will buy close to 17.5 million Easter eggs in 2015 that will cost around €36.6m which will lead to an increase in household and commercial waste.

Repak said that the country had generated 19,337 tonnes in Easter packaging in 2014 which included Easter egg boxes, cardboard and dinner party goods. Including commercial business, the total waste of the country was more than 38,000 tonnes.

UTV Ireland quoted Repak's CEO Seamus Clancy as saying: "Easter in particular, is a time of increased consumption with a rise in packaging waste generated."

He further added that there were many recycling centres that could help people dispose off the waste in an environmentally friendly way.

Keeping this in mind, the organisation has released a number of tips to help the country reduce packaging waste during the holiday season.

Repak has urged consumers to compress or fold cardboard boxes flat and put into household dry recyclable bin or take them to recycling centres and to fold and place aluminuim foils from Easter eggs in the dry recyclable household collection bin.

The organisation has also asked people to send Easter greetings through emails or texts to ensure a reduction in waste due to cards. It also said buying loose fruits and vegetables for Easter lunch rather than pre-packaged ones could help in reducing waste.
