DS Smith Develops New Biodegradable Carton for Veuve Clicquot Champagne

UK-based packaging firm DS Smith has designed a new biodegradable and recyclable carton to pack French champagne brand Veuve Clicquot’s products.

The new eco-friendly packaging solution was designed following completion of three-year research project conducted by DS Smith along with Veuve Clicquot and Italian paper manufacturer Favini.

Manufactured using paper from a blend of grape residue and natural fibers, the new packaging features a pasted label, which is developed from sugar-cane, showcasing a luxury feel while the printing is based on solvent-free ink and varnish.

DS Smith said it saved 5.2t of virgin fiber while producing a batch of the carton since the grape residue from the Veuve Clicquot manufacturing process was used as natural pigments to obtain a unique dyed paper.

DS Smith consumer packaging key account wines and spirits manager Jean-Charles Moras said: “It was an honor to work with a brand that is not only globally recognized but also really innovative and environmentally conscious.

“Veuve Clicquot had clear ideas of what they wanted to achieve from this collaboration and we welcomed the opportunity to spend time researching and developing this unique design for them.”

The pack design is known as Naturally Clicquot, demonstrating Veuve Clicquot’s brand values, the company said.

Earlier this month, the company collaborated with Amazing Chocolate Workshop, to develop a packaging solution that features a wide and clear window on one side of the pack.

The box packaging, which incorporates durable, food safe material, can be used for gifting purposes.
