AIMPLAS Has Developed a New Food Packaging Solution

Spain-based Technological Institute of Plastics, AIMPLAS has developed a new food packaging solution to offer better protection to the packaged food products.

The new packaging combines biodegradable and active properties with natural extracts of encapsulated garlic molecules, which release antioxidant, antimicrobial and antifungal properties in a controlled manner when they come in contact with food items.

AIMPLAS developed the packaging by bringing together stakeholders in the PLA4FOOD project.

Packages prepared using the new technology can be used to make rigid trays as well as flexible film for bags, both of which will have three layers, while the active natural additives are only in the inner layer.

Additionally, the multi-layer structure of the packages allows proper usage of additives leading to several advantages including the production of thinner and lighter packaging materials.
