The new project will create more than 200 jobs, with the company saying it is its first such venture in Mexico.

Production of multiple can sizes will begin in the first half of 2016, complementing Ball's North American metal beverage packaging footprint.

The majority of the capacity is contracted under a long-term agreement.

North American metal beverage packaging president Daniel W Fisher said: "The demand for standard and specialty metal beer packaging continues to grow, and the Monterrey plant will allow us to expand our customer base and product portfolio.

"This returns-oriented growth project broadens our geographic reach into a new and growing market for Ball's global metal beverage packaging business, which aligns with Ball's Drive for 10 vision".

Headquartered in Colorado, Ball Corporation makes glass canning jars for beverage, food and household products. Currently the company and its subsidiaries employ about 14,500 people across the globe and reported sales of $8.6bn in 2014.
