The Concept Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Has Been Unveiled at The Frankfurt Motor Show

The concept Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe has been unveiled at the Frankfurt motor show.

Even in concept form, the S-Class Coupe differentiates itself from its production-car sedan stablemate with a lower and larger ‘Avantgarde’-style grille with inserts that closely mimic that of an A-Class, more pronounced bonnet lines and a completely renewed rear end.

Only the interior – with the same core styling cues as the S-Class, but with more overt concept-car finishes – and sweeping side character creases link the production sedan with the concept coupe.

As is tradition with the outgoing Mercedes-Benz CL-Class, which will essentially be replaced by the production version of this concept, the S-Class Coupe features a B-pillar-less body design.

Measuring 5.05 metres long, 1.96m wide and 1.41m tall, the S-Class Coupe fills its guards with 21-inch allow wheels (265/35 R21 front, 295/35 R21 rear) and boasts full-LED “diamond look” headlights and tail-lights.

Mercedes-Benz claims that moving the rear licence plate from the tailgate to the lower bumper enables a more prominent positioning of the three-pointed star, while wider tail-lights shift the sedan’s horizontal look to a wider, more taut and squat appearance. The concept also boasts a glass roof that connects into the front windscreen via a piano black mould.

“The Concept S-Class coupe combines tradition and emotion,” claims vice president design at Daimler AG, Gorden Wagner. “The perfected design with self-assured style and the highly exclusive appointments make the coupe a true design icon and an expression of modern luxury”.

Familiar features to the S-Class sedan include a 12.3 inch central display, Intelligent Drive active safety technology, and Magic Body Control adaptive suspension.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe concept is powered by a 4.7-litre bi-turbo V8 engine producing 335kW of power and 700Nm of torque.

Mercedes-Benz engineers promise that the production S-Class Coupe will be a completely different driving proposition – much more dynamic, and sporty – compared with the existing luxury-focused S-Class sedan.

The company also believes the S-Class Coupe will be far sportier than the CL-Class it will replace, and that the new car will be able to target sportier cars in the segment for the first time.

The production S-Class Coupe is confirmed locally and is likely to land late next year. Mercedes-Benz Australia says it will in fact take only the S65 AMG in a  coupe bodystyle for the first time.
