Canada Launches Public Consultations on Plain Packaging for Tobacco Products

The Canadian government has launched public consultations on plain packaging requirements for tobacco products, in an effort to protect Canadians against the dangers of tobacco use.

The ruling will regulate the size and shape of tobacco products and would require standardized color and font in order to reduce healthcare costs.

Canada will develop new regulations for tobacco products based on the information gathered during the consultation period, which will continue until 31 August 2016. The consultation was launched on World No Tobacco Day.

Canada Health Minister Jane Philpott said: "Research shows that plain packaging of tobacco products is an effective way to deter people from starting to smoke and will bolster our efforts to reduce tobacco use in Canada."

According to a research, plain packaging measures, including the removal of logos, textures, colors and brand images, helps in reducing the attractive nature of tobacco products and thus make them less appealing.

Canadian Cancer Society Rob Cunningham said: "Plain packaging is a key tobacco control measure to protect youth and to advance public health."

In December 2012, Australia became the first country to fully implement plain packaging and in last month, France, the UK and Northern Ireland started implementation of plain packaging.

Separately, the New Zealand government announced its plan to present a bill on plain packaging to the Parliament in the first part of June.
