UPM Raflatac Announced Cooperation with Aliplast for Recovery of Release Liner

UPM Raflatac, a self-adhesive label materials supplier, has announced cooperation with Aliplast’s French subsidiary for recovery of release liner in France.

The partnership is expected to expand recycling services of Italian company Aliplast to polypropylene (PP) and paper-based release liners through RafCycle waste management concept of UPM.

Aliplast will collect, sort and distribute various release liner types to different recycling processes. It will also install large collection bags for use by self-adhesive label end-users such as drinks bottlers and companies from the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries.

The bags will then be collected and directed to the company's two sorting centers near Strasbourg and Lyon. The waste is transported to its final place of re-use after sorting.

Polypropylene liners including UPM Raflatac's ProLiner PP30 are re-used as raw material to produce wood-plastic composite products at the UPM ProFi factory in Bruchsal, Germany. Aliplast Italy will recycle other wrapping films into various packaging products.

Paper-based release liners will also be collected by Aliplast for fiber re-use and are re-pulped and de-siliconized. The pulp is used for papermaking at UPM's paper mills.

UPM's sustainable RafCycle service provides a solution for recycling paper and film release liners, minimizing the impact on environment and bringing down costs pertaining to waste management.
