LED TV Vendors Are Planning to Shift Their Focus More Onto Edge-Lit Units in 2014

LED TV vendors are planning to shift their focus more onto edge-lit units in 2014, which are expected to make up as high as 60% of LED TVs in the market during the year.

The penetration rate for direct-type backlit LED TVs has been growing at lower-than-expected rates over the last few years, and vendors meanwhile are starting to use edge-lit LED technology in their units, most notably high-end units such as Ultra HD TVs, causing an increase in the penetration rate for edge-lit units.

Taiwan panel makers such as AU Optronics (AUO) and Innolux are also incorporating edge-lit lighting technology in their 50-inch Ultra HD TV panels. The technology has been popular among China-based TV vendors, which are continuing to push the technology into the China market, noted Digitimes Research.

However, roughly 80% of China TV vendors' Ultra HD TVs still use direct-type backlit technology, said Digitimes Research.
