Nikon Announces a New Touchscreen-Equipped DSLR Camera, The Nikon D5500, at CES 2015

Nikon has announced a new touchscreen-equipped DSLR camera, the Nikon D5500, at CES 2015.

The D5500 is most notable for being a DSLR with a touchscreen display that can be swivelled and flipped 360 degrees. Yes, the Canon EOS 700D pulled off this combination two years ago, but this is the first time Nikon has attempted such a thing.

The display itself is a 3.2-inch 1,037k dot vari-angle unit, and users can use it to choose the focus point, pinch in to check focus, and even activate the shutter itself - all of which reflects the D5500's entry-level DSLR status.

Indeed, other than the touch display, the Nikon D5500 closely resembles last year's Nikon D5300. Like that camera, it's got a 24.2-megapixel CMOS DX-format image sensor and a 39-point autofocus system.

It's also got the same EXPEED 4 image processing engine capable of continuous shooting at 5fps. The Nikon D5500 also comes with built-in Wi-Fi.

On the video front, the Nikon D5500 can manage 1080p footage at 60fps, with full autofocus and stereo sound.

The Nikon D5500 will hit shops from February 5 for £639.99 for the body alone. £719.99 will score you the camera bundled with Nikon's 18-55 VR II lens, while £899.99 will snag the camera with an 18-140mm VR lens.
