Toray Plastics Developed Pwx5 to Be Used as a High-Performance Inner Moisture

US-based Toray Plastics has developed PWX5, a metallized Biaxially Oriented Polypropylene (BOPP) film that can be used as a high-performance inner moisture and oxygen-barrier web in gas-flushed applications.

While one side of the film is coated with vacuum-deposited aluminum on Toray's proprietary ultra-barrier layer which gives superior metal adhesion and shiny appearance, the other side comes with a stable coefficient of friction (COF) and is heat-sealable.

BOPP is now widely used as an alternative to cellophane, waxed paper, and aluminum foil. Biaxially oriented films are produced by stretching the films in two different directions.

The polymer used in producing polypropylene is obtained from petroleum and comprises only of carbon and hydrogen atoms.

Claiming to offer moisture, aroma, and flavour-barrier protection, the new film is suited for products requiring an extended shelf life as the company claims it has excellent barrier durability.

The products best suited for packaging with the Torayfan PWX5 are salty, flavourful snacks, cookies, crackers, biscuits and confectionery items.

Torayfan Division product manager Kerri Boyens said: "The ongoing expansion of global distribution channels makes shelf life a primary concern of the CPG. PWX5 metallized BOPP film, with its barrier-protection capabilities, is the solution to a significant packaging challenge."

Toray Plastics, a subsidiary of Toray Industries, specialises in manufacturing polyester, polypropylene, bio-based, and metallised films for flexible and rigid packaging, lidding, graphic, industrial, optical, and electronic applications.

Toray Industries with annual sales of more than $19m, is known for producing synthetic fibers and textiles, carbon fibers, plastics, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and high-performance films.
