M/A-COM Launched a Highly Linear, Integrated Two-Stage Differential VGA

In booth V16 (level 10.1, Hall 10) of the ANGA-COM 2013 Exhibition & Congress for Broadband, Cable and Satellite in Cologne, Germany (4-6 June), M/A-COM Technology Solutions Inc of Lowell, MA, USA (which makes analog semiconductors, components and subassemblies) has launched a highly linear, integrated two-stage differential variable gain amplifier (VGA) for DOCSIS3.1 reverse-path infrastructure applications.

Designed specifically for CATV head-end and system amplifier infrastructure reverse-path applications, the MAAM-011122 multi-chip module VGA provides what is claimed to be best-in-class linearity and high output power, enabling 36dB MER (modulation error ratio) for 64 QAM modulation with 39 channels at 52dBmV per channel.

Unlike the competition, it is claimed, the device offers a power-down function for each of the amplifier stages, allowing reduced power consumption when less gain is required. Such configurability makes the MAAM-011122 suitable for replacing legacy silicon and gallium arsenide (GaAs) solutions for upcoming DOCSIS3.1 upgrades.

Operating in the 5–300MHz frequency range, the MAAM-011122 exhibits a low noise figure of 3dB and gain of 39dB. The amplifier also has low harmonics with differential input and output control, making it suitable for DOCSIS3.1 reverse-path infrastructure applications.

“The MAAM-011122 greatly simplifies reverse-path system design by integrating 39dB of gain with 31.5dB attenuation range in a single 7mm [48-lead] plastic QFN package” says product manager Graham Board. “This part will help future-proof systems by covering existing reverse-path frequencies along with the new DOCSIS3.1 requirements,” he adds. “The VGA delivers high linearity at an efficient 2.2W, making it ideal for compact amplifiers and high-density head-ends.”

Samples of MAAM-011122 are available now from stock.
