LED Siren Tornado Alert System in a U.S. Town Gives Way to Smartphone Alerts

The Midwest in U.S. is a tornado prone region that many residents in The Heartland have set up weather alerts on their phones to prepare ahead of severe weather, according to WorldNow and KFVS12 report.

One town in Missouri has even installed a siren equipped with LED lighting.

The new LED siren set up in Wentzville is mainly designed to help the hearing impaired, and to notify them of potential tornados close by.

Butler County EMA Director Robbie Myers noted the LED lighting alert system is a good idea for towns or cities, but impractical in rural areas such as Butler County.

For one thing equipping 23 tornado sirens in the county with LED lighting systems would be costly, and it would be difficult for the sirens to reach everyone in the county.

Other alternatives include smartphone weather alert systems that can alert by sound, light or vibration, he said.

Smartphones are more accessible for the average town resident compared to tornado sirens.
