Regardless of mainland China’s lukewarm market for LCD TVs lit by LED backlights during the Labor Day holidays in May, Photonic Industry & Technology Development Association (PIDA) estimated Taiwan’s LED industry would rise 10% in revenue this year from last year.

PIDA , a Taiwan-based market research organization tracking the optoelectronics industry, set the 2012 revenue goal at NT$200 billion (US$6.8 billion at US$1:NT$29) and estimated the Taiwan industry would start to grow in the second half in anticipation of climbing demand for LED lighting.

The organization pointed out that the growth in LED lighting market in the second half will be fueled by the increased number of exhibitors signing up for the upcoming Guangzhou International Lighting Exhibition, which will be staged on June 6-12. The exhibition is estimated to outshine the Hong Kong International Lighting Fair (Autumn Edition) in terms of exhibitor number.

Also, increased exhibitor number is expected at Taiwan’s Photonics Festival, which represents collocated events International LED Lighting Exposition, International Photovoltaic Exposition, International Fiber Communications & Broadband Exposition and International Optoelectronics Exposition. Reported heavyweight participants include Nichia, Cree, Osram, Everlight Electronics, Seoul Semiconductor, Lite On Technology, Edison Opto, Formosa Epitaxy, Tekcore, and Neo-Neon.

According to PIDA, LED lighting will become a major momentum of the LED industry worldwide this year in light of climbing demands driven by energy-shortage issue. Nuclear power shortage, for instance, has driven up demand for LED lamps in Japan after the March 11 earthquake, inspiring the estimation that LED lamps will account for 38% of Japan’s total light fittings this year.

In mainland China, public work projects generate demands for a total of 1.22 million LED streetlights this year alone.

Electricity and gasoline rate hikes have given a boost to consumption of energy-saving products in Taiwan, including LED lamps. Also, the government here is replacing 326,000 conventional streetlights islandwide with LED ones.
