GREENBELT, MD – Fewer trucks were put out of service (OOS) during the annual North America-wide inspection blitz this year compared to 2013.
On June 3-5, 2014, commercial motor vehicle inspectors across North America completed 73,475 truck and bus inspections during International Roadcheck 2014, the annual 72-hour enforcement and safety outreach event carried out by members of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA).
By the numbers: 73,475 total inspections were conducted during Roadcheck 2014, up from the 70,023 total inspections conducted in 2013; 49,656 inspections were Level I variety, of 67.6 percent, whereas in 2013, 47,771 inspections were Level I; 23 percent or about 11,420 trucks were put out-of-service, down from 24.1 percent in 2013; 72,415 driver inspections were conducted in 2014, up from 71,630 last year; 4.8 percent of drivers were found with OOS violations in 2014, slightly higher than last year’s rate of 4.3 percent; 825 seatbelt violations issued this year compared to nearly 900 in 2013; 5,738 inspections were conducted to check hazardous materials/dangerous goods regulatory compliance and of those 919, or 16 percent were found with vehicle OOS violations and 172 or three percent with driver OOS violations.
Roadcheck begun in 1988 and inspectors have since checked over 1.4 million vehicles, resulting in about 318 lives saved and 5,840 injuries avoided, according to CVSA.
