GE Lighting has proclaimed that it will provide LED lighting systems that will be economical in power usage and maintenance for two Cleveland landmarks – the West Side Market and Cleveland's Public Square. The endeavor is part of a day-long GE Works commemoration of its employees, tradition, and Cleveland beginnings.
As part of West Side Market's 100-year commemoration, GE Lighting will supply power-efficient ecomagination lighting fixtures worth $80,000 to illuminate the exterior of the structure. Its 137-foot clock tower will be lit by about 30 GE LED spotlights and floodlights. Exterior lighting and street-facing lighting of the market on Lorain to West 26th street and the entire Market Square will have the lamps replaced by GE lights.
Public Square – USA's first example of electric street lights – will get new LED roadway lights and lamp posts worth $125,000. The new LEDS will supply evenly spread lighting, reducing dark areas that were a feature of traditional lighting, and provide a sense of safety in this high-traffic area of Cleveland.
GE scientist Nick Holonyak invented the first visible LED about five decades ago. GE LEDs are being used in various applications such as spot and flood lighting, traffic signals, signages, lighting for offices and houses, grocery cases, roadways and parking lots.
Over 100 GE staff was deployed to educate local customers:
- Qualified customers and engineering college students were provided a close-up view of the avantgarde LED system presented on the GE Lighting Revolution Tour Truck
- GE staff answered various questions in areas of North Ohio about lighting options, such as soft white (halogen) bulbs, CFL and LED bulbs and contemporary language on packages such as "lumen" and "lighting facts label"
