US: McDonald's Recalls 2.5 Million Hello Kitty Toys Over Safety Fears

US McDonald’s is recalling 2.5 million Hello Kitty themed Happy Meal toys over concerns that children could choke on some of its parts.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that two children have reportedly coughed out pieces of the Hello Kitty whistle that they had sucked in to their mouths.

The Guardian reports that the safety agency said that parts of the three inch tall Hello Kitty Birthday Lollipop whistle can detach and be inhaled, posing a risk to small children and has already lead to one child receiving medical attention.

Around 2.5 million of the whistles were manufactured, however McDonald’s insists that most of these have not yet been sent to restaurants.

The fast food chain has so far recovered about 1.6 million of the whistles.

The toys featured in Happy Meals and Mighty Kids Meals in the US and Canada throughout October.
