GigOptix Is Showcasing Its 100Gbps Networking Expertise

In booth #1531 at the Optical Fiber Communication conference & exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2014) in San Francisco, CA (11-13 March), GigOptix Inc of San Jose, CA, USA (a fabless supplier of analog semiconductor and optical communications components for fiber-optic and wireless networks) is showcasing its 100Gbps networking expertise with live demonstrations of its linear quad driver and BrPhotonics’ Thin Film Polymer on Silicon (TFPS) DP-QPSK modulator-based integrated 100Gbps TOSA for CFP2 transceivers, and GigOptix’s 12-channel 28Gbps VCSEL driver/TIA chipset.

GigOptix, CPqD (an independent Brazil-based research center focused on information & communication technologies with activities in system- and device-level optical communications) and the two firms’ joint venture BrPhotonics Produtos Optoeletrônicos LTDA (BrP) of Campinas, Brazil (formed in February) are showcasing the following products:

BrPhotonics’ 100Gbps integrated TOSA (transmitter optical sub-assembly) reference platform for CFP2 transceivers: a 100Gbps DP-QPSK TOSA reference platform with GigOptix’s GX62472 linear driver and 100Gbps DP-QPSK polymer modulator chip, example coherent receiver, and biasing circuitry.
GigOptix’s GX62472: a 4x32Gbps linear Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM) driver designed for operation in 100Gbps DP-QPSK coherent long-haul optical transmitters and for use in advanced multi-level modulation systems.
GigOptix’s HXT6212: a 28Gbps 12-channel vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) driver designed for compact, low-power optical transmitter pluggable modules and active optical cables (AOCs).
GigOptix’s HXR6212: a 28Gbps 12-channel trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) receiver array designed for high-capacity datacom pluggable modules and AOCs.
BrPhotonics is demonstrating a coherent optical link design for 100Gbps long-haul communication with a complete CFP2 TOSA and separate receive path circuitry. The integrated CFP2 TOSA and reference platform utilize a GX62472 linear quad MZM driver, a BrPhotonics 100Gbps DP-QPSK (TFPS) modulator, and an independent tunable laser. Discrete coherent receiver devices are located on the reference PCB as well as the GigOptix bias boards. The demonstration setup provides an eye-diagram display on a real-time sampling scope, and X and Y polarization observation via an optical constellation analyzer. “With silicon photonics technology and a wealth of team experience, BrPhotonics is in a great position to target higher data rates and smaller form factor reference platforms in the future,” says BrPhotonics’ CEO Dr Júlio César R.F. de Oliveira.

GigOptix is now shipping the GX62472 linear driver to customers for evaluation. BrPhotonics’ 100Gbps integrated TOSA reference platform for CFP2 transceivers is also available for evaluation.

HXT/R6212 live demonstration

To displaying its 28Gbps 12-channel VCSEL driver and TIA SiGe chipset, GigOptix’s demonstration setup includes ribbon fiber pig-tailing to complete the optical link between the transmitting VCSEL array and the receive photodiode array. “The 300Gbps HXT6212 transmitter and HXR6212 receiver are highly programmable, and demonstrate GigOptix’ excellent optical link performance and short-reach leadership,” says Dr Josh Nakaska, director of marketing of GigOptix’s High-Speed Communications division. “GigOptix 12-channel 28Gbps products enable VCSEL-based applications such as 300Gbps AOCs and pluggables, and build on the demonstration of our 4-channel 28Gbps chipset at OFC last year,” he adds.

The 12-channel 28Gbps HXT6212 and HXR6212 devices, as well as the recently released 4-channel 28Gbps HXT6204 and HXR6204 devices based on a similar SiGe (silicon germanium) platform, are available for sampling and evaluation.
