The Hertfordshire Police Website Has Been Hacked by a Supporter

The Hertfordshire Police website has been hacked by a supporter of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, with data about members of the force published online.

Information about officers in Hertfordshire's Safer Neighbourhood Teams, including login details and passwords of officers, in addition to phone numbers and IP addresses, were accessed and shared. The hacker published the police data alongside an "OpFreeAssange" banner and a quote from Julian Assange (pictured).

The Safer Neighbourhoods section of the Hertfordshire Police website was taken down as a precaution while the force looks into how the breach occurred.

"Hertfordshire Constabulary is currently investigating following the publication on the internet of information stored on a database linked to the public Safer Neighbourhoods pages of the external constabulary website," said a statement from the force.

"As a precaution these pages have been temporarily disabled whilst the circumstances as to how this information was obtained are investigated. There is absolutely no suggestion that any personal data relating to officers or members of the public has been, or could have been compromised.

"Nevertheless, matters of IT security are extremely important to the constabulary and an investigation is already under way."

It represents the latest in a series of hacks after the government announced its intention to extradite Julian Assange, should he leave the Ecuadorian Embassy.

Hacker collective Anonymous has claimed responsibility for other attacks in support of the Wikileaks founder, but the Hertfordshire Police hacker denied being associated with them, posting: "I am not a member of Anonymous," alongside the published data.
