The Central Asian Country of Turkmenistan Launches Campaign for Cotton Harvest

The Central Asian country of Turkmenistan has launched an agricultural campaign for the harvest of cotton, and is expecting at least 1.5 million tons of cotton harvest this season.
The Government of Turkmenistan has initiated the harvest of cotton campaign, mainly in the Akhal, Balkan, Lebap and Mary provinces of the country, reports the State News Agency of Turkmenistan (TDH).

Cotton is the main cash crop of Turkmen agriculture and one of the main exports of the country, second only to energy resources.

The cotton harvest campaign forms a part of the ‘Program of development of agricultural industry of Turkmenistan for the years 2012-2016.’

In total, the harvest campaign will involve 2,530 trucks, 2,412 tractors and 3,611 trailers for the transport of the collected raw cotton.

Turkmenistan’s Government has taken effective steps for the implementation of market mechanisms in the production of cotton to improve the situation of mutual settlements with producers of raw cotton.

Last year, the Turkmen cotton growers fulfilled their contractual obligations and produced about 1.1 million tons of raw cotton.
