AWA Introduced a New Food Certification Label for 100% Grassfed Meat Products in Canada

Animal Welfare Approved (AWA) has introduced a new food certification label for 100% grassfed meat products in Canada.

The new food label ensures that products, which are marked as grassfed, come from animals fed with 100% grass and forage diet and are raised outdoors entirely on pasture or range for their entire lives.

Said to be the result of both consumer and farmer demand to differentiate authentic grassfed products in a confusing marketplace, the label seeks to set a new standard for grassfed labels in the country.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency approved the standards ensuring that qualifying farmers can use the label on their products.

AWA program director Andrew Gunther said the new market-based solution would enable high welfare, grassfed farming businesses to differentiate their products in the marketplace.

"Although other grassfed labels and claims exist, none match the integrity and transparency offered by the Animal Welfare Approved Grassfed standards and certification procedures," Gunther added.

AWA audits, certifies and supports farmers raising their animals, according to the highest welfare standards, outdoors on pasture or range.
