Innovative Textile Developments at Next Year's Heimtextil Fair in Frankfurt,Germany

Young companies and emerging product, furniture and textile designers will be presenting inspiring ideas and innovative textile developments at next year’s Heimtextil (9 to 12 January 2013) fair in Frankfurt, Germany.

With a wide-ranging programme aimed at promoting young talent, the international trade fair for home and contract textiles is putting the next generation centre stage. "It's a win-win situation that simply couldn't be any better. Young people show what they are capable of doing and where things might be headed. And people with more experience can find inspiration and exciting product ideas, or even new talent for their own companies," summarises Olaf Schmidt, Vice President of Textiles & Textile Technologies at Messe Frankfurt.

The Young Creations Award: Upcycling marks the first distinction awarded by Heimtextil to up-and-coming talent that is dedicated to the principle of sustainability. The competition has been open to students of Aachen University of Applied Sciences and Coburg University, whose task is to create pieces for interiors out of recycled materials.

"By doing so, Heimtextil is addressing a topic that unfortunately is not given much thought at colleges and universities. Lifecycle management is a topic of great relevance for the future, particularly for new generations of designers," says Prof Jan Armgardt, designer and lecturer at Aachen University of Applied Sciences. The creative projects will be unveiled as part of a special exhibition in the new “Design live” area in Hall 4.2 and they will be judged by the public. On the evening before Heimtextil, 8 January 2013, the items on display will be judged by exhibitors and designers.

At the end of the first day of the trade fair, 9 January 2013, visitors will have until 2:00 p.m. to vote for the displayed exhibits. At 4:30 p.m., the award ceremony will take place on the floor of the special show. The prize carries an award of EUR 5,000.

For the seventh time, the Campus special show will be focusing on young design from Europe's next generation of creative talent. In cooperation with bestofdesign.org powered by rooms for free e.V. based in Berlin, Hall 4.2 will host a special exhibition featuring leading European design colleges and universities. Students and graduates will be presenting themselves and their ideas for textile design to an international public. Alongside German colleges and universities, European academies will also be represented, including from Estonia, Finland, Poland, Switzerland, Slovakia and Hungary. As a non-European guest, Brazil's Orbitato University will be showing its work at a national pavilion. Heimtextil's trade visitors may look forward to inspiring ideas for bath, bed and table at New & Next. Outstanding young companies will be displaying their collections and new products in Halls 8, 9 and 11. New & Next is to provide start-ups with the opportunity to present themselves to an international audience at Heimtextil. The newcomer platform focuses on highlighting innovative designs and product ideas. Participating companies include Sweden's Aquavireo, the Netherlands' The Soft World and Germany's Lenz & Leif, Peppa Grace and Robespierre Europe.

Heimtextil also provides a cross-disciplinary source of inspiration for young design. After its impressive debut last January, the Frankfurt School for Apparel and Fashion once again is presenting inspiration from the world of fashion. As part of the presentation in Hall 11.0, the next generation of designers will be unveiling their own work and exploring colour trends, zeitgeist and the 2013 fashion visions.

"For us it is important that students really use the materials provided by exhibitors to best advantage and in a suitable way. The materials should really look eye-catching on the models and point back to their various providers," explains Ina Franzmann from the Frankfurt school. The show titled Pieced up Contrasts spans models ranging from artistically experimental to avant garde that not only point the way forward for the textile zeitgeist but also present a diverse range of potential applications for different materials, structures and developments from home textile providers.
