Opel Adam Cabriolet on The Way: Report

A convertible version of the Opel Adam city car is under development, according to senior officials within General Motors Europe.

UK publication Autocar reports the pint-sized Opel Adam Cabriolet could go on sale in Europe by the end of 2014 to rival the Fiat 500C and the Citroen DS3 Cabrio.

Like those two, the Adam Cabriolet is set to feature a folding material roof panel, keeping the doors and rear pillars of the hatchback intact in a measure that minimises development costs and production complexity and promises higher levels of structural integrity compared with a fully fledged convertible.

The three-door Opel Adam hatch made its international debut at September’s Paris motor show, sporting playful styling, a well-dressed interior with a range of technology features and offering customisation options designed to appeal to the car’s youthful target market.

The 3.7m-long city car is currently available with two different four-cylinder petrol engines in three states of tune: the entry-level 51kW/115Nm 1.2-litre, and 64kW/130Nm and 74kW/130Nm versions of the larger 1.4-litre. All are teamed to a five-speed manual transmission.

The Adam remains off the agenda for Opel Australia, however, with the local brand focusing on the larger Corsa to attract customers at the budget end of the market.
