Ten cities in Indian state Tamil Nadu including Tiruchi, Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Tuticorin, Erode, Salem, Tirupur, Vellore, Madurai and Tirunelveli will replace 200,000 40W fluorescent tube lights with LEDs, according to a report by Hindu Times.

The LED upgrade will help save 26,280 MWh of electricity amounting to EUR 17 million (US$ 23.26 million) over a period of 10 years, said an official from Schreder, the Belgian LED luminaire supplier for the project.

Tamil Nadu’s Commissionerate of Municipal Administration is conducting investment audit for existing energy systems in municipal street lighting. Installation, commissioning, operations and maintenance of the LED lamps and luminaires will be followed after the audit. Schreder, as part of a consortium, has received a letter of intent for audit for 78,500 LED luminaires for Coimbatore, Tuticorin, and Thanjavur regions, the official said. The company’s production facility is based in Faridabad, India.

Another city Chennai also plans to replace nearly 110,000 high-intensity discharge lumianires to LED. About 60,000 lights have already been replaced, which will help the city save around 13,800 MWh and save around EUR 9 million in 10 years, said a Corporation of Chennai official. Schreder will be supplying 13,300 Brika LED luminaries, which equipped with smart lighting controls could help save up around 85 percent energy.
