Unilever Introduces a New Packaging Technology

Anglo–Dutch multinational consumer goods company Unilever has introduced a new packaging technology, which minimizes the usage of plastic by 15%.

Unilever has developed the new MuCell Technology for Extrusion Blow Moulding, in collaboration with packaging suppliers ALPLA and MuCell Extrusion.

The technology is expected to save around 275 tons of plastic annually.

Prior to rolling out, the technology will be initially deployed in Europe across the Dove Body Wash range. The bottles will contain at a minimum 15% less plastic as a result of the new packaging technology.

Unilever R&D packaging vice president Paul Howells said the company expects that peers in the industry will also take advantage of the technology and apply it to their products.

"We're always on the search for new technologies that can help us achieve our ambition to build a more sustainable business and halve our environmental footprint, and working with our two partners, we've created a unique technology that will transform our portfolio," Howells added.

According to the company, following the complete roll-out across every Unilever product and packaging format, up to 27,000 tons of plastic could be saved contributing to the target set out in the Unilever Sustainable Living Plan to halve waste footprint by 2020.
